Summer Table Decorating Ideas

Last week I showed you that I recovered my kitchen chairs in the yummiest of black and white picnic check oilcloth.   Well, it lead to some summer table decorating ideas as well.

I am loving bringing in black and white touches in my home recently – there is something about the classic nature of black mixed with the more modern crispness of the white that makes me giddy.

I added some laminated cotton – just cut and placed – in a black and white polka dot and the striped place mats are from Ikea.  I love that they are square instead of a rectangle.

Then I just brought in some green and yellow pops to make it feel more like summer.

I love setting our kitchen table.  We eat most meals at our island, but when we do eat the table, we tend to linger and talk more.

As the days are longer, the light streams in from the family room and it is just the perfect place to spend time with our family.  I try really hard to not just get caught up in “decorating” but actually living and enjoying the decorating and projects we do in our home.

And now that the meal has been shared and the plates have been cleared, the runner, flowers and candles are still on the table to be enjoyed.

And a reminder to sit at the table more often for a meal that lingers, even if for just a little bit.

I will share soon how I made the cute utensil holders and planters.

Wishing you a day filled with grace and thanks so much for reading.

  1. I love this fresh look. The pops of yellow really stand out. I remember my dear Mum went through a ‘black phase’, as we kids called it, in the 60’s. She was a beautiful decorator and had lots of antiques and dishes and she painted a lot of things (wood furniture) black. But, my favourite thing was the traditional black and white toile curtains in the kitchen window. It’s such a classic style that any colour will go with. Have a great week.

  2. That’s amazing that you got so much inspiration from covering your chairs in black and white. You took a good theme and ran with it. I also love how the photo frames and the wreath on the wall match the color scheme on the dinning room table. Great job!

  3. I love this awesome Summer table with black, White and yellow…who knew?! Now I’m inspired for a b, w and yellow table for summer too! Thanks for sharing.

  4. I think black and yellow belong together!! And a beautiful table makes one want to linger and just savor the meal. It is very Italian to have a meal last for hours — not constantly eating but enjoying the meal and the companionship. Frankly I’d love to do away with TV’s and all distractions. I really do love the black and white very clean and sophisticated.

  5. Laura,
I love your beautiful table. Nothing says “sunshine” to me like a bright splash of yellow! 🙂 I love to wear black and white because it’s so fun to accessorize with different color combinations–my personal favorite is hot pink added to the mix.

You are so right about everyone lingering at the table–it makes an ordinary meal more of a celebration. Thanks for the inspiration!

  6. Laura, I love the oilcloth on your chairs….well, I love the whole look of your tablescape. It is so nice to see oilcloth being used. I went to a fabric store/craft store last summer, looking for oilcloth. I asked the salesperson and they did not even know what I was talking about.

I went to the link you have for the oilcloth and I think I am in love….

    Thank you.
