Decoupaged Map Ikea Desk

A few months back I shared the completed bedroom for my daughter.  We call her Sunshine around these parts.

Well today, I want to share the Ikea Micke desk we hacked with decoupaged maps.

I was able to share with you how me made the bed, but I never got around to the other projects before we started into the Holiday season.

So, I thought I would reverse back and share with you the desk and drawer cabinet that we used in her room.

We started with this desk. Micke from Ikea

and then we added this unit to the side

At the time that we purchased them, it was only available with the wood fronts.  However, now, both pieces are available in the full white laminate which I think is gorgeous!  Also, the price on the desk has dropped to $69 – that can’t be beat.  The measurements for the desk are 55 7/8” long and 19 5/8” deep.  The height is 29 1/2”.  The side cabinet adds 13 3/4” to the length.

We got the home and assembled them.  As far as assembling goes, it wasn’t too bad.  The open side can be installed on either side.  We chose to assemble it on the left side.

Sunshine and I started talking about our options for the drawer fronts.  We consider wallpaper, wrapping paper or painting them.  Then we started talking about maps.  A week later at an auction, a box lot of vintage maps went up for auction and I knew just what to do.

All of the maps were from 1961 and 1962 and seem to be a collection from a family who traveled the east coast during this time.  Also included were a bunch of travel brochures from all the places that they had visited.

We lined up the maps to include where we live, Manhattan, the Bronx zoo and Boston – all places she loves.

I love what a  large surface it is and because it is laminate, it is easy to clean.  What did we do before Magic Erasers?

The drawers are filled with hair brushes, headbands and all the “stuff” that is important to an 11 year old girl.

  1. I love this desk! What a cool idea and it looks great in the room! My son’s dresser may be getting this treatment 🙂 Can I ask what you paid for all the maps?

  2. I have a similar desk in blonde oak but I love it in white and have been thinking it’s time for some paint. Your desk looks great and I love the maps. I think I can use the map idea on an old dresser my son has that is screaming for a change.

  3. I really love this idea! It looks great. I’m going to Ikea next month and hoping to come home with a desk. I love the idea of dressing it up like this!

  4. This desk looks great! I want to do the exact same thing….so how did you apply the map on the desk? Did you just glue it on? or did you use some sort of coating over it? Please comment how you did it, thanks!

  6. Hey there! I understand this is sort of off-topic however I had to ask.
Does managing a well-established website like yours take a large amount of work?

  7. This desk looks great. We love maps in our house and just bought two of these IKEA desks. How did you put the maps onto the drawer fronts? Thanks!
